Astoria Music Festival: Russian Gold III: A Russian “Old New Year’s Eve”
Internationally acclaimed Russian cellist Sergey Antonov and pianist Ilya Kazantsev return to Astoria for their annual winter recital just in time to celebrate “Old New Year’s Eve.” Russia’s old Julian calendar puts New Year’s Day on our January 14, so we have a second chance to celebrate. Join the party! The all-Russian program includes music by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff. Sergey Antonov, Gold Medal Winner, International Tchaikovsky Competition (Moscow). Ilya Kazantsev, Gold Medal Winner, Nikolai Rubinstein International Competition (Paris). Cellist Sergey Antonov. Hailed as "A brilliant cellist” (M. Rostropovich). “There are few musicians this talented, with this esoteric ability, being able to touch the listener so deeply and put them in another dimension. Sergey Antonov is playing with intuition, he breathes and lives in music; the instrument is a natural extension of him.” (Sven Bertilsson, Katrineholm Kuriren, Sweden.) "This musician has a serious artistic future.” (Marina Borisova, Daily Telegraph, No.91, Moscow, Russian Federation). Pianist Ilya Kazantsev. Ilya Kazantsev, a fresh and exciting presence on the international music scene, has been hailed by The Washington Post as “Virtually flawless.” He has performed extensively with orchestras in Russia and the United States, as well as appearing in recital in Germany, Japan, Italy, France, Canada, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, United States, and Slovenia. His many awards and honors include first prize at the Nikolai Rubinstein International Competition (Paris). He also won the International Chopin Competition (Moscow), and the 2007 & 2008 World Piano Competitions (Cincinnati).
