Grain Fest - CRMM
On April 20 and 21 the Columbia River Maritime Museum will welcome every 4th grader from Astoria, Seaside, and Gearhart to attend the first annual Cargos of the Columbia Festival.
This year the students will participate in a full day of activities pertaining to the number one export of the Columbia, grain! To expose students to the importance of the Columbia River as a hub for export students will engage in activity based programming across campus reinforcing how grain and the export of grain affect their daily lives and communities. “Grain Fest” is the culmination of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) programs the museum’s Education Department facilitates as they move to broaden the scope of maritime education.
King Arthur Flour will be traveling from Vermont with their Bake for Good: Kids Program to teach the students how to make whole wheat bread. They will send each student home with a baking kit including everything needed to make two delicious loaves, one to eat and the other to donate to a charitable organization on the North Coast. Portland based Solar 4R Schools will be on campus teaching students how to make working solar powered buoys. Students will also be tasked with the recovery of barrels of grain from a shipwreck using ROVs they build in teams.
