Great Race Pit Stop in Astoria
Great Race brings Historic Cars to Astoria
The Great Race 2019 will be on the west coast, going from Riverside, California to Tacoma, Washington during their 9-day, 2,300 mile adventure later this month. Astoria will be the locale for a morning pit-stop on Saturday, June 29, at the Barbey Maritime Center with 120 competing automobiles arriving in one-minute intervals between 10 a.m. and Noon. At each stop on the Great Race, spectators will be able to visit with the participants and to look at the cars. Local car enthusiasts are welcome to bring their classic cars to add to the atmosphere. Teams come from around the world to experience the scenery, competition and camaraderie.
The Great Race, which began 36 years ago, is not a speed race, but an antique, vintage, and collector car competitive controlled-speed endurance road rally on public highways. The “racers” will arrive in Astoria via the Astoria-Megler Bridge, stop at the BMC for about 25 minutes while they stretch their legs and grab a snack, then continue east on Highway 30 to their lunch stop in Longview, WA.
The rally event is recorded and the television coverage will air in the fall on Velocity and also be featured in Hemmings Motor News publications. Find out more about the race at www.greatrace.com or contact the Astoria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce for local details.
