Enjoy an afternoon of festive music from sunny parts of the world with the North Coast Symphonic Band at 2 P.M. on Sunday, April 9, at the Liberty Theater in Astoria. The concert band repertoire includes many Latin-influenced selections that have become classics and will be featured on this program. The event is titled “Muy Calliente: Latin Influences form Sunny Climes ” and has been skillfully programmed by music director and conductor Dave Becker to hint of the sun and warmth of southern countries. The Sedona Fire Band of Nehalem will start the afternoon with a pre-show of a family style, eclectic mix of folk, jazz, and Latin tunes. Feature soloists include tango dancers Estelle Olivares and J.L. Gilliken who will lend their artistic expertise to an afternoon that is sure to entertain and distract. Musical director Dave Becker has selected pieces that feature the rhythmic drive and long elegant melodies associated with Latin music. Trumpeter Bob LaTorre of Manzanita will be featured prominently as a member of the Sedona Fire Band and on multiple solos in the Latin-themed music. He will be ably assisted by Terry Dahlgren, band director at Seaside High School. Peter Hinsbeeck of Manzanita and former resident of Astoria’s sister city Walldorf, Germany, has arranged his composition Toucan Fly specifically for the North Coast Symphonic Band. The piece was originally written for the municipal band in Walldorf but has been recently rearranged for the larger North Coast Symphonic Band and this concert’s performance will be its American premiere. Guest tango dancer soloists Estelle Olivares and J.L. Gillikin who regularly teach at the Astoria Arts and Movement Center will dance to two compositions by Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla. Flutist Shelley Loring will solo on Piazzolla’s Oblivion and LaTorre will be featured on Piazzolla’s Street Tango. Other selections on the afternoon concert include John Phillip Sousa’s “Under the Spanish Flag” from Cubaland and award-winning composer Frank Ticheli’s San Antonio Dances based on his experiences during a residency in Texas. El Relicario by Jose Padilla is a paso doble or Spanish march featured at bull fights as the participants enter the arena. Tickets for the April 9th event are available at the Liberty Theater Box Office, 1203 Commercial, in Astoria, from 2 to 5:30 PM Wednesday through Saturday and two hours before the performance. Regular admission is $15. Student tickets for those 18 and under are $7. For more information on tickets, visit www.liberty-theater.org.
