Recology Artist in Residence Reception
There is a saying that one person's trash is another person's treasure. In the case of three Clatsop County artists, this turn of phrase rings especially true. Thanks to a unique program offered by solid waste and recycling hauler Recology Western Oregon, artists Cara Mico, Wenda Vorce and Stephen Shumaker have been provided the opportunity to access materials at the company's Astoria Transfer Station and recycling facility.
This creative outlet for artists is modeled after the award-winning Artist in Residence Program developed in 1990 by Recology in San Francisco. After a successful inaugural program in 2016, Recology Western Oregon, in partnership with Astorai visual Arts, continues to support artists working with recycled materials to encourage people to conserve natural resources and promote new ways of thinking about art and the environment.
Cara, Wenda and Stephen have been working in Recology's studio since July, and scavenging for discarded materials among the tons of material processed at the Astoria Transfer Station and recycling facility each month.
Recology and Astoria Visual Arts will host a reception to showcase new works from the collections of these three artists. Their work will be displayed through October 27.
