TNT-Thursday Night Talks
From Open Door to Exclusion: Chinese Immigration to America and Oregon By Dr. Jennifer Fang The Clatsop County Historical Society's Thursday Night Talks (TNT) lecture series for February 20th has been made possible in part through a Responsive Program grant from the Oregon Humanities and is titled “From Open Door to Exclusion: Chinese Immigration to America and Oregon” and will be presented by Dr. Jennifer Fang. Dr. Jennifer Fang, formerly of the Portland Chinatown Museum, will be sharing her research on Chinese immigration to the western United States during the late 1800s. In Astoria, the Chinese immigrant community made up a third of the local population. Members of this community were an important component of the local labor force. They established small businesses, schools, and social organizations, yet, faced with extreme hostility from the larger community and poor living conditions, a majority elected to leave Astoria by the century’s end. The Clatsop County Historical Society’s TNT lecture series is a free event at Fort George Brewery on the third Thursday of each month. Doors open at 6:00 pm, with lectures beginning at 7:00 pm. Seasonal beers on tap, food and other beverages are available for purchase. Minors are welcome with an accompanying adult.
