Our beloved community radio station KMUN is dealing with a variety of pesky invasive plant species on their property in Astoria. Most notably, English Ivy and Himalayan Blackberry have been slowly swallowing their hillside and would require thousands of dollars for professional removal. Since many hands make light work, the Clatsop County Master Gardener Program and KMUN see this as an opportunity to bring our downtown Astoria community together, get our hands dirty, and share best practices for invasive species removal. We are hosting public workdays from 5:30 – 7:30 pm every Monday in July at the KMUN radio station to pull weeds. We invite volunteers of all ages to join us! What to wear/bring: Work gloves Water bottle Long pants and long sleeves – these plants can be thorny and cause rashes on sensitive skin. Hat, sunblock, or sunglasses as needed Close-toed shoes – this property is heavily sloped, so having some tread will be helpful. There is also plenty of work along the flat sidewalk at the bottom of the hill for those who feel safer on flat ground. Your favorite garden tools, such as loppers, pruners, trowels, shovels, or hoes. We’ll also have plenty of extra tools available for those who don’t have their own! Master Gardener volunteers will be leading the workdays to answer questions and share tips and tricks for invasive species removal strategies. Snacks will be provided! No registration required. We hope to see you there!
