The mouth of the Mighty Columbia River, where the flow of nearly
400 miles of fresh water meets the largest body of salt water in
the world, is famously known as the Columbia River Bar. Ever
wondered what/why/how/where/when? Come learn about the
basics and have your questions answered from a local Bar Pilot.
Captain Christian Julien is one of fifteen trained experts that
navigate ships of all sizes across the dangerous transition from
ocean to river and enjoys sharing what he has learned.
About Capt. Christian Julien
Captain Julien has always been fascinated with working on the
water and has sailed aboard ocean-going cargo ships for nearly
three decades. Beginning in an entry-level position (Ordinary
Seaman), Christian would eventually attend the California
Maritime Academy and earn his license as a Third Officer in the
United States Merchant Marine. Continuing education and years
at sea would see him progress to an unlimited Master’s Licenses
and his first command of a cargo ship at the age of 32. After years
of serving as Captain of Bulk Carriers and Car Carriers, Captain
Julien was licensed by the State of Oregon to become a Columbia
River Bar Pilot.
